What to do in the first hour and first day after something goes wrong - plus a weekly routine that keeps small issues small.

The 24-Hour Rule - First Response Checklist
The 24-Hour Rule
The most important 24 hours after an incident - what to do and what not to do.
1
Preserve evidence first: screenshot everything before you block, report, or delete. Include usernames, timestamps, and the full URL.
2
Stay calm with your child: your first reaction decides whether they tell you next time. Listen before reacting; thank them for coming to you.
3
Secure the account: change the password, enable 2FA, review linked devices, and sign out of every session.
4
Report on the platform - and to the relevant authority (CEOP, IWF, Action Fraud, or police on 101) if a crime may have occurred.
5
Do not confront the other party. Never message, threaten, or negotiate with a suspected predator or blackmailer - report and let professionals act.
04
Conversation Starters - Scripts for Hard Moments
If your child shows you something upsetting
“Thank you for telling me. You did the right thing - you're not in trouble, and I'm going to help you sort this out. Can you walk me through exactly what happened?”
If you discover something without them telling you
“I saw something on your phone that I need to understand better. I'm not angry with you - I want to help. Can we sit down and talk about it together?”

Weekly Family Digital Check-In - 15-Minute Routine
Sunday Night Digital Check-In
A 15-minute weekly routine that stops small issues from becoming big ones.
1
Screen-time review (3 min): look at weekly totals together - which apps took the most time? Any surprises?
2
New contacts & friends (4 min): anyone new in their game chats, DMs, or friend lists this week? Who are they, and how did they meet?
3
Anything weird this week? (5 min) messages that felt off, friends who asked for things, ads or videos that seemed too targeted.
4
Plan the week (3 min): anything coming up - birthdays, trips, events - that might change online behaviour? Agree one change for the week ahead.
